• I’ve had this wordpress site (https://www.citywomen.co.uk) for many, many years but not used it much in the last 3 years. I also have sub-sites /woa-award /fl-award and /project-diamond. This week I updated to the latest version. All was going well, until it didn’t! All the sites crashed. I’ve managed to restore fl-award and project-diamond but cannot restore woa-award and the main citywomen.co.uk site. (Each sub-site has wordpress installed).

I have access to the site files via FTP. I’ve tried debug on the config file. I’ve tried disabling all plugins, I’ve deleted the plugin Toolbar Extras which was throwing an error on the woa-award site. This plugin isn’t used on the other sites.

I’m “reasonably” confident. I have some backups on Dropbox and Updraft. But there’s always some nervousness. I’m not a web development expert.

I have considered installing the latest version via FTP but am a bit hesitant about doing this and causing even more issues.

But I know that things can normally be repaired

The “technical difficulty” special link that was emailed to me earlier in the week worked, but the one sent today does not enable me to access the site and it’s telling me that the /woa-award site is the only one with a problem. I’ve tried renaming the /woa-award site to disable it in the hope that would enable the main site to work but that didn’t solve the problem.

My error message is HTTP ERROR 500 . The site is hosted by Fasthosts via a third party.

    Ideas welcome. Thanks.

Your website at citywomen.co.uk is already broken, not functioning, and offline. So you have nothing at all to lose by loading backups, troubleshooting, etc.

Did you ask Fasthost if they have a backup?

Login to your control panel, and launch the file manager in order for you ro read your php error logs. There will be more detailed information in there. Did you ask your host for support?

Without much more information (i.e plugin versions, theme names and versions, php version, etc, etc) , these are only general ideas for you to get on the right track. That said – recovering this type of thing is usually very straight forward.

Thanks for speedy response, much appreciated. My relationship with Fasthosts is via a third party. I’ll try them, but they’re not experts either although I’ve hosted websites with them since the last century.

I have access to my C-panel so can try that.

The WordPress email I received said:

An error of type E_COMPILE_ERROR was caused in line 97 of the file /home/domains/vol3/336/2808336/user/htdocs/woa-award/wp-content/plugins/toolbar-extras/includes/admin/tbex-addons.php.
Error message: Array and string offset access syntax with curly braces is no longer supported

This is why I deleted the Toolbar Extras plugin which is only on that sub-site. What I don’t quite understand is that https://www.citywomen.co.uk/fl-award is working as is https://www.citywomen.co.uk/project-diamond

I’ll keep playing. Having been in this situation before, I know how time consuming it can be!!!

Plugins are all updated (on the fl-award and project-diamond site). I think the theme for citywomen.co.uk is NewsPro. (It’s Metro Pro for project-diamond).

I think I updated the PlugIns before I updated to 6.3.2 on the main site. Until I did that it was OK. And, silly me, I didn’t do a back up at that stage, but I’ve changed nothing since the pandemic.

    I love a problem!!!

    Hm, seems messy.

You are using WordPress Mulit-site for these?

The /fl-award/ site is using the News Pro theme, the /project-diamond/ is using the Metro Pro theme, and the main citywomen.co.uk is also using the Metro Pro theme. This site was active as recently as October 19th,

    https://web.archive.org/web/20231019054230/https://www.citywomen.co.uk/

These forums are intended to support free themes and plugins, but since you are using a paid theme, I would start with their own support or forums:

    https://studiopress.community

That said, you said you already logged in and deleted all the plugins from here?

    /home/domains/vol3/336/2808336/user/htdocs/woa-award/wp-content/plugins

And you’re sure that this path is specific to the main site, and not the fl-award site?

Bc the sub-pages do not seem to be loading either:

    https://citywomen.co.uk/fl-award/judging-process/

    https://citywomen.co.uk/fl-award/winners/gallery/

    Just the homepages.

Project Diamond seems to be the only entire site loading properly

You’re a gem. The fl-award site is fully functional now. I’ve been messing with that this afternoon.

I don’t think I’m using Multi-Site. I’ve installed WP into separate folders and the wp-config files are linked to the main database

    • WordPress Database Table prefix.
      *
    • You can have multiple installations in one database if you give each a unique
    • prefix. Only numbers, letters, and underscores please!
      */
      $table_prefix = ‘wp_fl’;

The main citywomen.co.uk was working until a couple of days ago. The woa one hasn’t been functioning for a while (Toolbar Extras was causing the problem).

I find Jetpack is often the problem. I deleted it and re-installed into the fl-award site.

I’ll battle on, but truly very grateful.

Agree re: JetPack. It’s a mess.

Did you validate the table prefix in your main site config file, versus the actual db? And it matches?

    (@gwen-rhys)

I’m not sure what you mean.

The citywomen config file was simply ‘wp_ ‘ and the others are wp_flaward etc. I’ve tried it with ‘wp_ ‘ and ‘wp_admin’

    The database is called citywomenns

Not having touched these websites since 2020 isn’t helping. I used to work on the main one on a daily basis.

Maybe you’d like to give me a fee for sorting this! I don’t like to give up but in the past I’ve pulled a whole-nighter fiddling with wordpress!

I also have an old website https://citywomen.co.uk/wp2016/ which I kept to “play” with so that I could test out new themes and stuff on that. I that’s not working either and I’ve renamed the Plugins Folder so that they’re not being picked up.

The db is called citywomenns, however the prefix is what ……….. prefixes the tables of the database. Not the db itself.

    ??

    This site fails.

Lol, I hear ya – but work to your strengths!!!

I’m not sure I know that – where will I find it? I thought that might be the ‘wp_xx’ bit.

See screenshot that displays the table prefix definition in the config file, and the matching table prefix in the database:
