You can set it to subscribers only in admin to add comments.
You have to set it up for anyone other than admin to add posts.

Instead of a counter, you might consider using an analytics program. For instance, check out https://performancing.com/metrics .

Relatively simple to set up with a snip of javascript in your theme’s footer.php.

i personally use AWSTATS that reads raw log files. it works great for me. though it is not something that you had asked for, if you are willing to work a little extra, i suggest you use this.

Thank you all for your help. I do look at awstats, but I feel positive it is refecting my visits and my ISP? number changes so much that I must look like a new visiter each time. Where in administration do I set it up for anyone to blog on my site?
