Could you make it any more difficult?

  • First let me say I have been making my own web sites for almost 10 years.
    Now what I wanted to do is start a blog. Sounds simple, a lot of people are doing it but I didn’t want to use Google or something like that. I wanted my web site name/blogs. So I decided to use yours. Well after about 6 hours of endless code searching I still haven’t found out where I can change the “Just another WordPress weblog” I can make it bigger, smaller or go away. I just can’t change the words.
    While I was trying to edit your header I went and set up an e-blog or what ever with Google it took about 20 min. The only problem is the name on it. So I still want to do something else. What I’m getting at is why yours should take hours when others take minutes? Why not just make it so someone can click on the header and type what they want?
    I have put in about another hour in trying to do your upgrade. I still don’t think it worked but the funny thing is I can’t even find out where it tells what version I have.
    I guess I’ll just design my own page and use it. It should only take a couple of hours. When I started I thought why bother when there are free ones already done. I thought I could save me some time. Boy was I wrong.
    I’d like to say thanks anyway for all the work you must put into this project. Making it available for free, well you can’t ask for more than that. Also to tell you what I saw looked great. But I fear if you keep making it more complicated to where people can’t use it then you will surely lose out to places like Google.
    Just my thoughts.

    On the Settings Page. On the very first screen.

    In the footer of each and every admin page. Like, at the bottom of every single screen.

    Seriously, if it takes you “hours” to click the Settings link or find the version number that is on ALL of the admin screens, then perhaps you should stick to something simpler. Blogger or WordPress.com, perhaps.

    WOW! You just gave me the hugest laugh Brettray, seriously! WordPress is about as uncomplicated as it gets. It really tickles me when people come here ranting and raving about how horrid and worthless WP is when the problem their having isn’t a problem a all. SIX HOURS and you never once thought to go into the admin panel? Obviously not because if you had and you’d gone to settings/general you’d have found what you were looking for right in front of your face.

    What it says at the bottom of the page is “GET” version 2.6.2. and it said that before the upgrade. So I guess that means the upgrade didn’t work? Because that is what I upgraded to.

    I go to Manage and this is what I have to chose from.
    * Posts
    * Pages
    * Links
    * Categories
    * Tags
    * Link Categories
    * Media Library
    * Import
    * Export
    I have been through them all and no settings.

    I go to design which is where I would think you would edit your page and went through all the pages and I have this.
    * Themes
    * Widgets
    * Theme Editor
    * Header Image and Color
    Still no settings.
    I have been through all the tabs and don’t see it.

    It’s just a very different way of doing things than creating a static html website. A good place to start to check out the links here:

    No I had never been to your web site until I found the forums. I got your blog page from my web host through their cpanel and there are no directions so I am winging it.

    I have been through them all and no settings.

    Settings is on the far right hand side of the main bar where you see Manage.

    The Codex has a wealth of info and instructions, and it is searchable if you want to look up what something does. Here’s more info on the Dashboard where you can change your WordPress settings:

    Again… in the admin panel in the upper right hand corner. Settings/(possibly “options” if you’re using a really old version)/general. The second line down. Tagline. That’s where you can remove/edit “Just another WordPress weblog”. Sigh.

    If you just recently installed the thing, then I’d expect you to already be running 2.6.2. That’s the latest version. Why would you install an older version?

    If you installed through your web host, then I suggest next time not doing that. We are not your web host or your cpanel, and we are not responsible for them giving you old software.

    I just found this and went here /blogs/wp-admin/edit.php and found the settings. That is more like it.
    I was trying to do everything through my cpanel and my web host. I thought this was their program and everything there is just code. Your admin. page is nothing like theirs.
    I’ll check yours out some more now that I see you are an independent company and have your own web site and it has a FAQ.

    You don’t change a core file to edit the tagline. You change it the way Otto and I have explained in detail.

    I think he was using some other sort of admin screen that was not WordPress at all, actually.

    Anyway, you go to your site’s web address and add /wp-admin/ to it to get to the admin screen.

    What do you mean by “your site”. If you installed WP at your domain, the admin panel would be at YOUR site.
