Could someone help me interpret this error message?

  • Hi,

    I upgraded my WordPress on all of my sites and each one was fine except one. I received the evil “We need to update your database” error. Now I cannot get into my wp-admin panel, but people have been able to leave comments, etc.

    Could someone please tell me what this means and what I need to do to fix my site? I know a little about pho, but am not a programmer, so please keep that in mind.

  • Looks like something fouled up when the database was being upgraded. Try:
    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

    Okay – let’s see if I can understand this.Sorry for all the questions. I have never done anything like this before and have about 5 years of posts to lose.

    1) When you say re upload all files and folders – should I do a backup?

    2) Can I just switch my theme to the default WordPress theme and then switch it back rather than messing with my folder theme name? Why would labeling it “old” make a difference?

    3) When I rename my theme “-old” – can I change it back later and use my old theme?

    4) After this, will I be able to get into my admin panel at this point to do the upgrade? My host told me I needed to upgrade from there.

    It’s a little late to do a database backup now. I’m hoping that you have a pre-upgrade database backup in reserve.

    Yes – although I couldn’t guarantee that it would work OK after the update.

    We can but try. This is just the first step to see if that you get to back in.

    No. I mean delete all files & folder except the wp-content folder, your root .htaccess file (if you have one) and your wp-config.php file, Then re-upload all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    I have access to my host’s control panel, but not wp-admin. I have a monthly backup that appears to have been made before this all went down (hopefully.)

    I don’t know whether i should download blog.sql or everything all of the .sql files. Do I just backup all of them?

    I was able to download a fresh copy of my theme just in case.

    btw, thanks forbearing with me. I really don’t know what I am doing, as you can tell.
