  • You can use the Standard Rates option to define tax rates for all products. You’ll need two rows: one to define the state rate, then another rule that applies to the city or zip code of your local jurisdiction and the rate for that one is just the local tax rate. WooCommerce will sum/overlap all rates that apply to a customer order.

The tax guide is here: https://docs.woothemes.com/document/setting-up-taxes-in-woocommerce/

There are also automated tax services like AvaTax and TaxCloud which will handle all of this for you in a touchless, always up to date setup.

I have the local & state rates configured.

The local rates include all the zip codes in the county, and the state is configured to encompass the entire state (e.g. no zip codes / cities).

I have it set to display in the cart and checkout as a single total.

They are both setup correctly. Local taxes are entered under the “Local Rates” tab, and the same with the state (State Rates). Taxes are “Enabled” under “Tax Options.”

I seem to have it configured correctly; however, taxes are not showing in the cart or during checkout.

I continue to try and resolve this…

At this time, the price in the cart is showing the included taxes.

However, it’s only calculating the state tax.

I have the State tax as priority 1, and Local tax as priority 2.

    I’m working it…

    I’ve changed the configuration.

I added the State / Local tax rates to the Standard Rates. It’s the same as before, local tax priority 1 and state tax priority 2. It should be applying both rates for local purchases.

It’s still only calculating state taxes. It isn’t adding / calculating the local taxes.

So I’m still having problems with the tax calculations.

    Anyone? Any advice or help?

This is some type of cart functionality problem.

It’s applying the state tax to everything no matter if you’re logged in or just surfing the site.

Once proceeding to checkout, and then logging in, the billing address or shipping address MUST be “updated” before the total is adjusted to show the correct taxes. It does not automatically apply the correct rates depending on your billing / shipping addresses.

This has become a pointless endeavor.

I still believe there may be a problem in your configuration. Can you provide the values you selected for “Calculate Tax Based On” and “Default Customer Address”? Also, what does your Standard Rates tab look like? And do any of your products have a tax class specified on them?

Calculate Based On: Customer Billing Address
Default Customer Address: No Address (changed last night)
All Resale Products: Taxable / Standard
    Standard Rates:

    US / LA / 6 Local 5 Digit Zip Codes / No Cities / 6.0000% / Local / 1 / Compound (no) / Shipping (no)

    US / LA / No Zip Codes / No Cities / 4.0000% / State / 2 / Compound (no) / Shipping (no)

If you want to see it work, visit my site as a guest.

Pick one of the booster kits and add it to the cart.

    Click Checkout.

On the Checkout page Shipping Calculator enter: Louisiana 71229

Click Calculate Shipping and then Click Update Cart.

    This method works for visitors.

Today I actually logged in, added an item to the cart, and it calculated the taxes automatically.

From your last comment, it sounds like you have it working to your satisfaction now.

For your reference, the tax on your Cart page will never be correct on initial load because the shopping cart does not yet have any address information. Only after using the shipping calculator first can it know enough information to get the right taxes.

Also, it looks like you may be using some third party add-ons that alter the checkout. I’ve seen some of these add-ons can interfere with the tax process. It is best to disable all such plugin extensions while debugging a problem in the core shopping cart.

I hope everything is working great for you now!

There are no plugins that alters the checkout. However, this is one of the most complex themes I’ve seen to date.

    WooCommerce Responsive Theme – Computer

They use a framework of standard php and template files. The file structure is quite overwhelming at first.

I’m sure it modifies the checkout process in some fashion.

It seems to be functioning now, and with that, this thread is “resolved.”
