Correct Snippet Variable for Product Category Titles?

    Hello,

    I had a question regarding Yoast’s snippet variables under Search Appearance.

    For Search Appearance>Taxonomies>Product Categories if I want it to display the Name I’ve set for the product category (i.e. the title/H1 tag of that product category) do I use the snippet variable %%title%%, %%term_title%%, or %%ct_product_cat%%?

    %%title%% made sense because that’s how you display post/page titles, but on the list of available snippets article (https://yoast.com/help/list-available-snippet-variables-yoast-seo/) it categorizes the default variables, and %%title%% is referenced for “Posts, Pages, Products, Media, and Custom Post Types”, while under “Taxonomies” it shows %%term_title%%, so it is a bit confusing…

    My other question was, regardless of the snippet variables I set under Search Appearance, it will be overridden if I enter in my own custom title in the “SEO Title” field for that individual page/post/category/etc?

    @homelesshenry We’ve identified several concerns in your message and responded to each below:

    If you are using WooCommerce you could use either %%ct_product_cat%% or %%term_title%% in this case. The %%ct_product_cat%% is specific to WooCommerce though. The %%title%% variable returns what is set for the SEO Title for that specific product, not the product category is is part of.

    Yes, you are correct I am using Woocommerce.

    Ok, thanks, that makes sense.

    What I actually want is to show the specific Yoast “SEO Title” I’ve set for that particular Product Category page in the SERPs. And since you’ve stated whatever is written in the SEO Title field overrides the default snippet variable set in Search Appearance, that’s great.

    Although in the interest of completely understanding snippet variables, you said:

    If what is set for the SEO Title for that specific product/product category overrides the default snippet variables set in Search Appearance, isn’t %%title%% useless? Since it requires an SEO Title to pull the data from, but the existence of an SEO Title will override it anyway.

    @homelesshenry No, because if you wanted the variable to call the SEO Title, as part of constructing the meta description.
