I strongly advise you not to do this and it can negatively affect your site. 404s do not need to be ‘corrected’ unless they are URLs that used to exist but now don’t.

thats exactly whats happening. I’ve published a new site on december and now search console is showing 404 errors. but the urls are all from the old site and they just don’t exist anymore. but somehow google found them 9 months after they were deleted and keep telling me that my site has 404 errors.

You can use the 404 page to create redirects for these pages and redirect them to the appropriate replacement page. Redirecting them to the home page serves no purpose. In this case it would be better to return a 410 error instead.

Also, if Google found them then you should use the 404 page to find out how it found them – the pages must be linked somewhere, and you should update those links first.

Thank you! the 410 error its a good one. I know that redirect to the homepage is not the best option. The problem is that search console is pointing more than a 1.000 urls to correct, so it’s impossible to redirect them one by one.
