I needed to update a site for a friend who runs an art shop. To my unpleasant surprise I saw she still used version 4.2.2. I clicked update, put in the required password and the update of the plugins started to run.

After updating 3 regular plugins (which run without a problem on all my other sites) I suddenly get an update-core.php blank page.

I’ve read several treads on what to do but there are 10 different solutions and one solution more complicated than the next. I still don’t know what to do to get her site back. I can still see a regular admin page but every option leads to the blank page.

    Can someone please help?

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

I’d like to add that the lady has decided against reinstalling her website. She asked me to close it and start an Instagram account so she can sell her paintings there.
