• There’s no core/image option or attribute to lazy load the image? I tried with a couple Twenty-twenty themes just to be sure, and placed my image far down the page just in case WordPress was performing some magic. But, there was no loading="lazy" being applied.
Besides, this should be an option rather than being programmatically set in case the image is one of the first elements to load on the page.

  • Yes, you’re right, there currently isn’t an option to apply lazy loading. There is native lazy loading in WordPress, but note that the first three images will omit lazy loading intentionally most of the time.

If you’d like to submit a feature request to let users manually set this as an option, please open an issue in the Gutenberg GitHub repo: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues
