“core” file in WP root; unable to publish posts?

  • There’s an 11 MB file in my WP root, it’s date/timestamp is 6:38 AM CST this morning, 02-08-2007 and it is called, simply “core” with no file extension.

    I noticed it when I was unable to PUBLISH a post, but I FTP’d into my (Dreamhost) account and deleted this “Core” file (binary file), and was able to publish once. When I tried to publish a second post, the file kept reappearing, with the earlier date/time stamp and I cannot publish, just save drafts. I have a trouble ticket in with Dreamhost, and I’m running the patched version of WP 2.0.7. Other Dreamhost WP installs are not affected.

    Any ideas what this is and could my site have been compromised? I don’t notice any other unusual files there. Thanks.

  • That’s definitely not a WP file.
    You should upgrade to 2.0.8, though.

    “core” is a dump of memory that is created when a running unix process crashes. So I’d say that your server is having problems and crashing PHP. How/why this is happening is harder to say. Get your host to fix it, or get a new host.

    That would explain the presence of many many lines like these in my error log this morning, then:

    SYSTEM or PUBLIC, the URI is missing at line 1, column 60
    [Thu Feb 8 06:25:06 2007] [error] [client 70.123.98.65] Premature end of script headers: /dh/cgi-system/php5.cgi
