• Hi all,

Has anyone tried to copy a wordpress site they developed on go daddy.com and replicate it exactly but using a new domain name?

I.e. Two identical websites but linked to two domain names.

If you have and you have any tips then please get back to me, I’m lost!!!

    Thanks

    Rob

  • Hi Rob. Are these suppose to be two instances of the site, or should they both basically be the same site? For example, if you update one, should it automatically update the other one?

To replicate a site is the same as moving it.
You’ll need to grab a copy of all the files and a copy of the database. In the db, you’ll need to change all instances of your old domain name to the new domain.

    Thanks for the replies.

Im still confused, as I had a company upload the files to my FTP File manager i dont know how to download them now? I logged in to godaddy.com and highlighted all folders but the download button stays greyed out….

christine the link was helpful, but too advanced for me.

heres the scenario, i have two different domain names, both with hosting on godaddy, one is setup fine, but i want to replicate the exact site on to my other one, rather than just forwarding on.

I hope that explains it better!

    Thanks

Hi Robertmolloy999. I’d like to verify first exactly what you’re trying to do.

    A. I want a copy of the website. When I edit one site, the other will not change.

    B. I want the site accessible from another domain. If I change one site, it automatically changes the other site.

If you’re wanting scenario B, then you shouldn’t need to copy an files. GoDaddy may have an option to “park” the first domain on the second.

The more details you can provide the better, and the steps we provide to you will be much different.

    Hi Brad,

    Thanks for your help.

I just looked into option B but i couldnt find anything that relates to that in godaddy.

I would say option A is my prefereced choice as i want the same content across both sites, but independant of each other as the domain names are different and i will be changing the logos etc.

    hope that helps.

to download more than one file on godaddy, you select all the files, and archive first, then download the archive

If all of the files are going to be on the same hosting package on godaddy, but just in 2 different folders, you can highlight everything and use the copy feature

    Hi Rev Voodoo,

doing the initial archiving wont affect the current site will it?

    Thanks

Nope. It makes a zip file of everything you have highlighted, but doesn’t delete the files or anything. So the files pretty much get copied and included in the zip

excellent. it seems you can only download to the current folder structure, which in this case is huge.

any ideas how i can download to my desktop?

    thanks

I’ve never had a problem Dling to my desktop. Maybe they have a file size limit?

If that’s the case you may need to use ftp to down/up it

Filezilla is a good free program I use to connect with ftp. Yu can down/up with no file size restrictions

thats great thanks, currently downloading it all now.

when i upload will i have to alter anything or alter once its completed?

    thanks for all your help!

I hadn’t followed this topic completely, I just jumped in to help with the godaddy stuff since I know it

Are you trying to share content between the sites, or just copy content and have them independent?

Either way, hopefully one of the other posters can help you further, I was just jumping in with what I could offer!
