Can you copy Projects to a new theme or change Projects to Posts?

Hi, I am new-ish to WP (might as well be a complete beginner compared to everyone here) and helping out a friend who has a very outdated site he wants to update. He has 4400 posts within Projects, which are the bulk content of his site, and I cannot figure out a way to get them to migrate or copy over when activating a new theme. Most of the time the themes don’t even use Projects, but I tried Divi and although it uses Projects his 4400 posts don’t show up there. I have tried what feels like a thousand things but the Projects and all of their skills seem to be stuck. I just need them to be accessible in other themes. That’s another thing…he seems to have used Skills where he should have used Taxonomies? Or…I don’t know. It’s a mess. He has created 4000 separate projects when they all should have been posts; they are all single images, categorized. Can I change these to posts?

I’m hopeful there’s something obvious I’m missing because otherwise I’m stuck! So grateful for any advice!
