• I am in the process of converting my static site to wordpress. I have re-written every page and I am ready to convert it. It appears that I need to do it with a custom permalink but I’m having problems getting a permalink set up that only has the name of the page. The permalinks works when I have /index.php/%postname%/ in custom settings but does now work when I put /%postname%/ and I only want the post name.

I’m not on a Linux server and have so far been able to get past the problems that has caused but now I’m wondering if that could be contributing.

If you know of any other way to move the pages please let me know.

  • I think the web server couldn’t write or create .htaccess file. It is the file required by WordPress to allow pretty permalink like /%postname%/.

Did you notice that there is a message at the bottom area of the screen when configuring permalink after saving? Usually it is displayed along with the content that should be written to .htaccess file when WordPress (web server) couldn’t write to that file.

If that’s the case, then you have to edit the .htaccess file manually. You should ask for support department of your hosting provider on how to do this.
