converting from free blog site

  • I just did a one-click install at dreamhost, thinking that i’d have greater access to widgets and modifications if I have the blogging software on my own host.

    my current ‘free’ blog (s) are at https://toddreynolds.wordpress.com

    my wordpress software is at my domain:
    https://toddreynolds.com/wordpress
    but IT thinks that my blog, https://toddreynolds.wordpress.com is empty and lives THERE.

    and now i’m all confused.

    but now i have a folder on my host, AND the free stuff. how can I integrate these two, and is there an advantage to trying to navigate from my own server to begin with? is it faster, etc.?

    or is it faster and easier to begin with to use the web interface.

    I do know that when I was with typepad, widgets and all that stuff was a little easier to understand than is this. or am i simply being thick and not looking in the right place for solutions?

  • Is see two separate and distinct blogs:
    one at https://toddreynolds.wordpress.com and one at https://toddreynolds.com/wordpress/

    Now the https://toddreynolds.com/wordpress/ looks to have a Weblog Title of “toddreynolds.wordpress.com” but you should be able to change that via Administration > Options > General

    i understand all of that. here is my actual question, i hope you can help clarify.

    I want to know if I even NEED that blog, or the software which is on my server. What i want to be able to do is edit my existing blog (https://toddreynolds.wordpress.com) and the other ones I have more easily, and to hack the templates. I understood (rightly or wrongly) that I could do that more easily if the actual software was on my server and if I learned to address it directly.

    so, a few distinct questions with this new understanding.

    1. is this stuff on my dreamhost server simply another blog? not a set of software like MT that I can use to edit my existing blogs?
    2. Can I port toddreynolds.wordpress.com over to toddreynolds.com/wordpress without too much hassle? (that is if it’s not just another blog)
    3. Is having WP software on my own server completely superfluous and do I gain nothing from having stuff there? Should I just use the web interface as I have up until now? thank you so much, and sorry for my ignorance. just trying to understand.

    1) It is a self hosted blog not hosted at wordpress.com.

    2) You can import the contents from wordpress.com to your new self hosted blog. To import from yourWordpress.com blog, navigate to Manage > Export on .com blog and follow the instructions.

    After downloading the .xml file, navigate to your new blog’s admin area and click on Manage > Import and follow the instructions.

    3)You have total control to modify files – add plugins they won’t let you at .com – same with themes. IOW, much more flexible.

    all of your instructions worked perfectly.

    however, I cannot find my preferred theme anywhere. not on the presentation page, not on the extended themes page. is is possible that the Fjords04 theme is not available at all in the non-.com domain? or is there a way to export the theme itself? I searched the docs for answers to no avail.

    once again, thanks for the answers to amy questions, all complete, all resolving my problem.

    except for the theme problem.

    next i’ll explore the flexibility.

    any one can help me that how can i redirect my old typepad blog post’s URL to my wordpress blog URL to the same post.
