• Hi all,
It would really be great if you might be able to help me direct my web developers to a solution. I will try to be brief. (and thanks for any help you can offer)

I am having a wordpress site built now from the ground up. (I am new to WP btw)

    1) I paid them a bonus to add 600 location (city) pages for SEO purposes and were told to clone all of the page data (just text) and add the specific City name in all applicable places on the pages. (so the ‘/Chicago’ url would have Chicago in various places all through the data.)

    2) Apparently they did this ‘dynamically’ and I cannot easily edit this data. (WordPress shows me a blank page when trying to edit) – My plan was to go back to these pages and make them all unique to the city & keep most of the ‘Cloned’ page data as core text. (I hope this makes sense)

-When I pressed the developers that I needed this text easily editable (as I assumed it would be), that are confused how to do it. (other than doing it manually)

Would anyone possibly have any ideas for my issue? I assume that I am asking for them to convert a bunch of dynamic pages (600) to WordPress Static pages. Lesson learned I suppose…always be ULTRA clear when paying someone to do something. (I just assumed I would be able to edit the pages…)

    Thanks again.

  • There’s far to many way sthat this can be done to give you any sort of authorative answer at this time. The only thing that I’d suggest i sthat if you’re getting a blank page when you’re trying to edit these things, that normally means that there’s an error in the code, and your devleopers should debug that issue before anything else. If htey can do that and get it running you may be able to do something. If they don’t know how to get that working then change all of your passwords (in WordPress accounts as well as your web hosting account) and then fire those developers.

If you want to find extra help, you can advertise paid jobs here, but if you can muddle through and figure out a bit more we can always try to help here.

I had to do that once, it was… a nightmare!

It wasn’t web pages but far more complex: convert prehistoric word files (version 1.2) to a modern file format.

But anyway, what I did in the end was: put the filesin a directory and then create a script to automate the conversion.

    Hope it helps.

Thank you…I am really pushing back on these guys.

(Not that I can do it but…) I assumed there could be some sort of script that could be written to do this but they are saying that no such script exists.

I asked them to add the appropriate amount of pages and their quote was cheaper than expected (but not that cheap if you know what I mean).

They apparently did it dynamically. Having non-editable text on these pages helps me zero & requiring me to manually set up all 600 pages defeats the purpose of paying them. As I mentioned, always be crystal clear when paying for this stuff. (ha)

Yes, I have to agree. Paying someone can be good, or bad… It all depends on what you want out of it, and what you actually get. But then I do get paid to do what I do, and I know a fair bit about how it all works, so I can do most of what I want for myself. I know that doesn’t help you, but it all comes down to business I guess. If they have provided you with what they said, then that’s what they do. if they have told you that they can do something, but they can’t… then don’t pay.

No such script (may not) exists. But knowing a scripting language helps.

Since I’ve got extra time now, I can try to help you. could you possibly send me one of these pages at [email address moderated – these forums do not provide support via email] ?

@st4nd3y Please don’t take this the wrong way, but it’s considered very bad form to offer private assistance on these forums.

@catacaustic I know, but it’s not my intent to offer a private assistance at all, only to avoid to ask MontyTheLab to copy/past the page content here.

Well, that’s still very much frowned upon. Don’t let the mods see this or you will find out. ??

What? I am confused…Isn’t the Point of this forum to help each other? If that’s not the case, this forum is weak.

@st4nd3y …Thank you for the offer to help! I am still pushing back on the developer to see what they come up with. They were paid a good deal of money for something that may have taken them a few minutes to set up. I may touch bases if I completely hit a brick wall with them.

Yes, the point of the forum is to help each other – in a public space. Any private chats or solutions take away from what others might see, and that means that they can’t get any help from whatever solution that you’ve been given.

@montythelab: Posting your email address or asking others to contact you off forums is really frowned upon here. This is to protect users and also to prevent people form trying to solicit work or harvest emails from the forums. Whether or not you feel that this makes these forums “weak” is immaterial. Please abide by this when posting here.

…ok, point taken. When someone offers to help you…say no thank you. Because we are all too stupid to know whether or not someone is stealing our work. …sorry if that sounds sarcastic but it’s ridiculous that we are not allowed to help each other because we are being protected from being adults.

@catacaustic: Agreed, and it’s only after posting that I though about proposing the use of pastebin or something similar.

@esmi: I did not see it this way, and it’s actually appreciable to have such an active moderation.

This forum creates threads that evolve into tutorials for other people, it’s not just helping the original poster. Volunteers should ensure they’re providing helpful answers for other people as well.

There are also limitations of forums in general, not just www.remarpro.com forums. All volunteers can do is give advice and those asking for help need to be able to implement that advice. If either role needs something more then they’ll need some other means of support.

People are still welcome to post and ask for help as long as support stays on these forums.

I understand. I do wish there were at least the ability to PM other members when necessary. I assume there is a lot of talent in these forums and it would be ideal if we could better access that talent.
