Controlling WPP using WP Download Counter

Assuming you’re talking about this one, if it was actively maintained by its author I might have considered the idea of adding support for it. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case. It was last updated over 7 years ago (!!!) and the developer doesn’t even respond to support questions, so I’m going to pass on this one.

Okay. How about we have an option of ranking posts based on clicks of links within the post. Not not post title clicks.

Easier said than done, my friend ?? Doing that would require rewriting a big chunk of the plugin, something I’m honestly not willing to do at this moment.

Instead of reinventing the wheel, why not use a plugin such as Download Manager? It seems decent, it has a good rating, it’s actively supported by its developers and it even has a top downloads widget.
