controlled registration

I am using wordpress 1.5. I want to include a private area for members of my church. I would like to have the registration form come to me before a password is sent to the new user. I need to verify that the entry is from one of our members. I have searched but don’t see anything related to this need. Can you direct me or suggest a method to do this?
