You can add the block anywhere in the main content area, but I’m trying to add it below the main content area – specifically underneath a related posts plugin and higher than comments.

For example, is there a way of instead of adding the block manually to a page, use a shortcode in a template that conditionally loads the block if one is attached to the page? And then have control over where that block is displayed.

You could make use of widgets and put the recipe shortcode in there.
