• Greetings,

I have been having problems with WP 3.01 for a few days now. Once I go to the settings page for permalinks I lose all access to my dashboard and log-in. Multiple times the blog just disappears to a 505 error. And the only way to correct this is to delete WP from my server and start over again (this happens with either download option of WP) and again and again and again…

The thing is for 3.0 I had to change the default permalink setting to one of the others we can choose from just to get previous pages to even load (or a 404 page would just come up) and it took me some time to figure that out.

3.0.1 is doing the same thing — but if I do nothing but even just toggle to the permalinks setting page everything goes awry. I don’t even have to click on any radio buttons — just going to the page will cause all the problems.

    What is going on?

  • I don’t have any solutions for you, but maybe I can help you start looking in the right direction. When you make changes to permalinks, wordpress tries to write to a .htaccess file in your blog root, so that it can do some redirection (I dont know if it does this on permalinks page load, or only when you make changes). The fact that your posts are 404ing right now implies that this file isn’t there, or isn’t set up correctly.

Maybe something with php trying to write to a file is causing your server to blow up?

You might try setting up a sample php script to write to a file (google “fwrite() php”), to see if that gives you a similar result.
