There’s no such thing as a “lay coder”. If this is not something that you can manage yourself, you could wither:

– change themes
– employ a professional to resolve the problem for you.

Do you have any idea how many thousands of WordPress themes there are out there? Do you honestly expect people to know each and every one of them in detail?

if this is the case, please state in your question what you have read so far, and what you don’t understand.

particularly the instruction to change the excerpt length is not theme dependant, and only involves to copy/paste a bit of code into functions.php of your theme.
