    Hello,

I’ve been using Contact Form 7 for years, it’s been great and worked well (thank you).

Having moved to latest version, I’m now getting “There was an error trying to send your message. Please try again later.” in an orange box, it thinks all contact form submissions are spam!

I have temporarily removed the v3 reCAPTCHA keys, so that the forms will work. Without reCAPTCHA the forms work fine but obviously I get spam too!

I’ve read stuff on contactform7.com and on this support forum…
Deleted and reinstalled Contact Form 7 version 5.1.6 (just in case)
Installed Flamingo (as recommended) – all my form submissions get “reCAPTCHA response token is empty.”
The Google reCAPTCHA Admin Console shows zero requests!

Theme: Twenty Seventeen (a very simple website)
Plugins: MailChimp and WooCommerce (no other plugins)

Please could you suggest a solution?

    Many thanks

  • It’s possible that you have not setup the reCAPTCHA v3 integration correctly.

If you’ve registered correctly for reCAPTCHA v3 (by following the instructions at reCAPTCHA v3) & it’s working, you should now see the reCAPTCHA Privacy badge displayed at the bottom of every page on your site (not just the pages where you’ve got CF7 forms).

If the reCAPTCHA badge is not showing, this shows that reCAPTCHA v3 is not working on your site.

Neil Murray, Thank you for your thoughts, yes I believe I have / had reCAPTCHA v3 integration set up correctly, with the keys installed, the privacy badge was displayed at the bottom of all pages. They are not currently displayed, because I have removed the keys so that the forms will work!

With reCAPTCHA v3 keys, getting “There was an error trying to send your message. Please try again later.” in an orange box (it thinks all form submissions are spam!) Flamingo reports “reCAPTCHA response token is empty.” for all submissions. NB. I’ve temporarily removed keys so I can receive forms! Does anyone have a solution – many thanks!

UPDATE – my website uses a child theme, a lightly modified, Twenty Seventeen theme. I’ve found that if I use just the parent theme: Twenty Seventeen (i.e. no child) then ContactForm7 works fine. Has anyone encountered problems with child themes and ContactForm7?

Status: v3 reCAPTCHA keys installed and error “There was an error trying to send your message. Please try again later.”

    Many thanks

SOLUTION – my website has implemented some techniques to improve it’s performance, this included deferring the loading of java script (a little bit of code in the functions.php), it was this code that stopped Contact Form 7 from working. My website is now successfully using reCAPTCHA v3 with Contact Form 7.

NB. I’ve added the reCAPTCHA privacy and terms to the footer rather than have the floating badge!
