Contact Form 7: Placing validation errors next to input boxes

I’ve been able to style my contact form 7 just the way I want it except for one detail. The validation errors (ie You must enter a valid email address.) appear under the input boxes and I’d like them to appear next to the boxes.
I don’t want to change the plugin code to do this – I’d like to do this with css but I haven’t had any success with the styling I have tried.
Any help would be much appreciated.
