Constant 504 error

Today I downloaded and installed the free version of Duplicator. However I am unable to create a package as the plugin throws a 504 Error during the scanning process. I have already done a bit of debugging to see if there was a conflict with other plugins. As well I have been in contact with my hosting company to see if there was something they could do their end. However, all that done, it seems as if it is the Duplicator plugin itself that is the culprit.
It aborts and throws the error 504 during the scanning process. However, when running the pluging in an IE browser it also becomes unresponsive during the first step (Create package) but only for a while, due to a long running script (popup notification)
I have just read a complaint about a similar issue in the reviews, and according to your reply the solution may be as simple as to configure the plugin settings correctly. I any case, I would greatly appreate your help.
