• I’d like to consolidate the three copies of Montezuma I’ve somehow ended up with. Two are embedded in folders within the individual site folders, while the third one is at a higher level, wp-content/themes folder, parallel with the sites. I’d like to keep just the last, but also have separate child-of themes (ideally in parallel folders to the remaining Montezuma theme folders) through which to manage the local variations.

    However…
    1. I can’t see how to point all the site child-of themes to the same instance of Montezuma – this doesn’t seem to be an option in the add-theme page.
    2. Even if I could do that, I don’t know what files I could then safely delete. For example, I have no idea where pages or posts are held.

    Any suggestions?

  • First of all, when you refer to your different sites as using “child-of” themes, are you saying that you followed the instructions on creating a child theme, or did you just make changes to the virtual templates and CSS files? Because when “child” is used to refer to a theme, it has a specific connotation with regards to WordPress.

You can activate something known as WordPress Multisite on one of your sites. This allows you to control multiple sites from one WordPress installation, meaning you only need to install the themes and plugins once and have them available across all of the sites which are part of your network. The different options that you set for each site remain independent of one another, i.e., changes that are made to one site do not affect the changes to another site, so if you are looking for a way to have the sites share a common stylesheet, you’ll have to select a different mechanism.

The steps for setting up WordPress multisite are too long to enumerate here, and they are somewhat technical, but you want to read Migrating Multiple Blogs into WordPress 3.0 (even though the title refers to “WordPress 3.0,” the instructions are applicable to WordPress 4.x). And you’ll want to follow the instructions pretty exactly so you don’t lose any of your existing posts or pages (i.e., make sure to follow the instructions for doing the export and import).
