consistent comment behaviour between single posts and listed posts

hi

I am trying to get single posts to default to showing a comments link not the entire comments form

the line of php which returns the comment link in list pages doesnt appear to work in single page view – hard wired into the behaviour of the single page?

how do I get round this?
