• I have a dedicated cloud server and all of my WordPress sites getting “Connection was reset” error. The apache log has this error:
child pid 17161 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)

This is happening for front and admin access – none of the WP sites are the same – different domains.

All other sites function fine – Joomla, HTML, OpenCart

Any advice on how to troubleshoot would be appreciated.

Issue clears up on its own after 15-30 min

    Thanks,

    Kirill

  • Hi Kirill,

On what instance does it give this error in the logs? You mentioned the issue clears up on it’s own after 15-30 mins.

Don’t understand what you mean by instance.
It starts randomly for all WordPress installations and then stops.

My hosting company setup scripts to do dumps next time it happens. I did recompiled PHP. So far it has not happened again.

Do you have recommendations on how to troubleshoot this error.
    Thanks,

    Kirill

    Hi Kirill,

By instance, I meant how does this error start to appear. Setting up scripts to dump or log everything is certainly the right way to go about it.

You could also install another test WordPress site & see if the same thing happens. This is probably appearing because a process could be taking too much memory (that’s one of the reasons for Segmentation fault errors). That could be coming from a plugin you have or from somewhere else in your WP installation.

I think doing the above things could give further clue on why this is happening.

You are missing the point – I host website for my clients. I have about 15 different WordPress installs. All of them exhibit this issue. Different domains, different version – nothing the same, with exception – all are WordPress sites.

Instance – just happens. I get a call from a client that site is not resolving. When I start checking all other site, only WordPress sites are down. After about 30 min no more issues.

    Thanks,

    Kirill

    Thanks for the details.

This happens even if there is no plugin installed on any of your WP installs? With the default themes & no plugins installed – does this happen for such WP installs too?

I did come across some previous such posts:

But these point to specific plugins & themes.

I updated my theme to the latest revision and the problem went away.
