A good practice is to do the import in local on your own computer.

I am doing this for a client the joomla is on a different live server, different domain and hosting provider. Also the wordpress is on a different domain and hosting.

If the sites are located on different servers, then you must copy the Joomla database on the same server as WordPress before running the import. You can do it with phpMyAdmin.

Do I have to replace the existing WordPress database tables?

No, the WordPress tables should not be replaced.
The Joomla and WordPress tables prefixes should normally be different.
