• Hi everyone,
I am trying to run wordpress locally on my computer before uploading it but I have a problem. Everytime I want to upload a new theme, I run into this problem:

    Connection Information
To perform the requested action, connection information is required.

    Hostname
    Username
    Password
Connection Type Connection Type FTP FTPS (SSL)

Now, I know that there is about a million topics related to this problem, but I can’t solve mine. I am using the latest versions of both XAMPP and WordPress. Does anyone have any clue what the ftp hostname, username and password are with xampp? How can I make sure that the port 21 is open?

If you can’t answer my question, do you know an alternative to XAMPP that I could use on my MAC? The only thing I want is to be able to run it locally.

    Thanks for you help!

  • You can see the port status by using the XAMPP Control Panel. There is a button labeled ‘Port-Check’.

I don’t know what vtxyzzy is talking about. He/She must not be using a Mac. I too am running into this problem as well. The username should be: nobody and the password: xampp. Th Hostname should be: localhost. However, when I go into the Security section XAMPP says that “The FTP password for user nobody is no langer ‘xampp'” However, I have never changed this password and I can’t log in as well… Still looking for an answer, if I find it I’ll post back here.

Oh wow, I finally figured it out! All the information appears to be what you used when you installed XAMPP to your Applications folder.

So Hostname is: your computer’s name (you can find this in Sharing in System Preferences)
Username: the short name you installed xampp with
Password: the password you used to install xampp to the application’s folder

When I do this, though I get: “Unable to locate WordPress Root directory. Installation Failed” when I try to do automatic updating of WordPress 3.0 Beta 2.

    Hope this helps.

ok does this all mean that if you dont use xampp or mamp, and you have a mac, you CANNOT make this “connection” work, so cannot use some plugins??

I could never get the FTP settings to work, but I found this solution for anyone on OSX: https://www.messaliberty.com/2010/04/how-to-fix-wordpress-automatic-upgrades-and-plugin-installs-on-xampp/

These changes will stop your local WordPress install from asking for FTP settings when trying to do updates through XAMPP.
