After recent updates to WordPress and/or Smart Slider 3 plugin and/or Autoptimize plugin (not sure which one broke the functionality of Smart Slider 3), Smart Slider 3 started showing a blank space instead of the slide show.

In its FAQ, Smart Slider 3 addresses the blank space issue as Javascript related. To quote,

It means that there is a JavaScript error on your site which blocks other scripts(for example Smart Slider’s scripts). You can open up the browser debugger window with F12 button and check the console if it shows error or not. If you solve these errors Smart Slider should work fine.

Usual problem is that you have the latest WordPress version, but your theme loads very old jQuery version (1.7 or older) and the WordPress admin bar throws a JavaScript error. In this case, you have to remove the old jQuery from your theme’s functions.php.

Taking the cue, I unchecked Optimize JavaScript Code? in the Autoptimize options (it was checked until recently and Smart Slider 3 worked fine), and voila, Smart Slider 3 is working again!

This is a short term fix until the plugin devs (not sure which one or one(s) straighten things out.

Hi @techtangerine!

If you turn back Optimize JavaScript Code on -> go to your page, where the problem happens in Chrome -> press F12 -> click on Console -> refresh the page, what error message do you see appearing in the Console?

It is possible, that there is a conflict within our code, but problems could happen even if an error comes from another plugin or from the theme. The way JavaScript errors are happening is, that they are stopping all JavaScript codes following them, so if our code would be after an error, that could make our code not to run.

Hi Gabor,

I’m having this exact same issue after installing the Autoptimize plugin.

If I follow Techtangerine’s advice above, nothing happens. It’s only when I deactivate the plugin that the slider works. I don’t want to deactivate the Autoptimze plugin though as it’s doing amazing for my sitespeed.

The error I get is:
Uncaught ReferenceError: N2R is not defined
at (index):5
(anonymous) @ (index):5

Hi @gmpsmith!

Your error message indicates that the order of our codes was probably changed and the N2R definition happens afterwards where it was used. Please follow this documentation:
https://smartslider.helpscoutdocs.com/article/1976-cache-or-minification#critical
to try to exclude our codes from the JavaScript optimization.
