I am setting up a new website, and it is placed on a different domain – I will move it over to the real domain name once the site is ready.

I’m leery to configure Yoast on the new website until it’s on the proper/live domain, lest it keep records of the old domain in it’s database somewhere, or worse yet – to connect dots between my content and the “staging” domain instead of the real one.

Are my fears reasonable? Or can/should I configure Yoast on the staging site (with the wrong domain name), but answering setup wizard questions as if it were on the proper domain?

I’d like to use Yoast as I’m writing initial pages/posts.

TL;DR – will it hurt me to install/configure Yoast on a staging site (on an incorrect domain)?

@shuk2 It’s okay to install and set up Yoast SEO on a staging or development site and then migrate that content to another domain when it’s ready to go live. WordPress and Yoast SEO both reference the values for the site’s domain from the settings for WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) that are found under Settings>General.

However, you’d still want to take care to try to use relative links for any internal ones that you create in your page’s contents, instead of absolute.
