• New member here. I hope this is the right forum for my concern. Please move it to a better forum if necessary.

I have had a languishing blog for a while now, (irrelevant), and so set up my Username a few years ago. (I knew NOT to use “Admin”.) Within the last year or so, I added the free Wordfence Plugin. I’m notified by them when someone tries to hack into my site, and, Wordfence shows me “tried” username attempts.

In the last few days, there have been several hacking attempts (more frequent than usual), and now, the hackers are getting close to accurately finding my correct Username. (!)

I went to my dashboard this afternoon, hoping to change my Username, but then saw that it Can’t Be Changed!

ARE there any ways for me to change my Username to something far less “guessable”? I don’t know code. I’m very worried about my site security, especially since today Wordfence posted a blog about the “Ransom Hackers” that are so vicious.

I’m not yet going to post a link to my site, because (a), it’s pitiful looking!, and (b), I don’t think you need to see it to help me. If you do, I will.

Thank you for your help. If someone answers in the next 2-3 hours, I’ll be away from my computer, but I’ll check when I get back home.

  • In wordpress admin, usernames cannot be change. But you can hack that method by going to your database..

    phpmyadmin>YourDataBase
    >look for the table (table_prefix)_users and open it,. note: prefix default is wp_
    >look for your username and change it then save..

    grats! Username Changed! ??

One thing to remember is that it’s not your username that gives your account security, it’s your password. That’s why it’s always recommended to have the strongest password possible.

Think about it this example… Gmail uses your email address to log in, so everyone in the world knows your Gmail username, but that system is secure – as long as no one knows your password.

sheldz Thanks for your answer. Before I posted, I searched some of the previous help messages re this, and saw a similar response. Since it’s “GreeK”, I didn’t know if it applied to “Me”. ?? Anyway, IF I do this, do I just type the “phpmyadmin>” into my browser tab? And, silliest of questions, is the “YourDataBase” portion my blog url, or do I use those exact words?

catacaustic—Thanks for your reply, too. Good reassurance, but…
I think I have (or WordPress does it for me?) my settings set to auto log-in! egads!—easier for me, and the bad guys! I’ll go check that out. If it’s MY set up via a password company, I can change that auto-open feature. If it’s something WordPress did FOR me, can that be changed?

Thank you both for your time and reassurances, and helps.

    Susi.

hey there.. i have a question for you before answering your questions.

is your wordpress site has a host?
-if you are.. then you can go to the cpanel and search for the phpmyadmin

or just running your site thru your localhost?
then it depends in your localhost application..

it seems like you still don’t have enough knowledge about developing websites.
    anyways.. you’re welcome ??

Thanks again, sheldz. Yes, it’s hosted. I forget about my Cpanel, partly because I’m not very active on my blog, and mostly because I’m not techy. If I can remember how to log into it, ?? I’ll go check it out.
