Very nice plug-in. Had to use the PHP string option to re-define a variable containing e-mail addresses and worked just fine except in one minor way that I presume affects regular mailto links as well: Email addresses will appear to public view when a cursor hovers over the link. I wonder a) if some breed of bot will or already can capture this info, which clearly is “out there,” and b) if there is a simple way to obscure this exposure as well.

Some bots are a little smarter and decode decimal and hexadecimal entities, but most of them don’t. A safer way is JavaScript encoding, but not everyone has JS enabled. The most accessible spam preventing is still a form.

Thanks, I may implement a solution like the one you link if and when I return to this issue. Someone ought to package a version of a good javascript-based solution like the above as a simple WP plug-in. Or maybe they have, and I just haven’t run across it.

I spent or rather wasted a lot of time looking at form-based solutions for an indefinitely large number of members to invite contact from colleagues and potential employers. Few to no commonly available contact forms are out of the box suitable for this purpose, and replacing send-to addresses (typically set to the blog’s own e-mail) via PHP runs into problems with Web Hosts. I ran out of time trying to figure a solution out and remain uncertain about the various workarounds and hacks I was considering.

I like your plug-in because it’s so simple, and seems likely at least to take a bite out of the common breeds of spambot, but, if even the author of the plug-in is recommending something else…
