Computer keeps freezing when I try to upload a picture?

  • I’m kind of at the end of my patience and I have no idea what is causing this. It could be any number of things so if anyone has any insight I would appreciate it.

    I had just signed up with bluehost and imported my year old wp.com blog to wp.org when my laptop completely broke down. This was roughly 2 weeks ago and since then I’ve been putting together my new wp.org blog on my dad’s computer, a 27 inch imac 2011.

    To begin with I was working on my blog for a few hours, uploading images before the computer would completely freeze – and I couldn’t do anything at all on any program except turn it off directly at the back (not the way you are supposed to) and turning it back on again.

    Its got to the point where if I can load one image, if I’m lucky when this happens. Mostly if I try to upload anything the whole computer just freezes. I have been forcing the computer to shut down 5 or more times a day and its getting ridiculous.

    I read it could be a plugin problem – so I deactivated all of them, but that was no help. I changed the theme (which I downloaded from elegant themes) back to original wp one but that hasn’t helped either. Though I haven’t deleted it of the theme section of the blog – I could try that next.

    I also started up a second wp.org blog as an addon domain on my bluehost (the reason I went with them), downloaded a theme from a different site, graph paper press, where I haven’t installed any plugins yet, but I am also have the same problems on that blog as well.

    Is it a plugin? The theme? Switching to wp.org? The computer? Bluehost? The size of the image? I don’t know. I never had a problem uploading images when I was with wp.com. Granted I was on my laptop (a 2008 Macbook Pro), but I don’t know why a newer imac would struggle…

    If anyone has an idea what this could be? Or if it has happened to them I really want to get this sorted. I cannot really update my blog and my second site is my professional online portfolio so I really need to be able to upload my artwork and getting it running asap. Thanks.

  • Can you try it on a different computer? Network? You have to start ruling things out.

    No – I don’t have another computer.

    I’ve deleted all the plugins and themes and its still happening.

    I really have no idea how to fix this.

    There are two types of uploader, the browser one and default one. I have had “some” trouble using the default one in the past. When that happens, I use the browser uploader. There is an option to use it under the “drop files here” box. The option is this “You are using the multi-file uploader. Problems? Try the browser uploader instead.”
