Compressed Backup File more than 100MB

If the total size is within 500MB we can usually increase your quota. We just need the username sent to support “at” backup-technology.co.uk. I can’t guarantee an increase as it is discretionary but most of the time it is done, and it’s free.

Sending via email will never allow anything over 35-50MB usually. This is simply how email works and how nearly all servers are configured. The servers will usually reject anything over 30-50MB. So files larger than that can’t be emailed.

If you go to General Settings you can exclude specific folders, yes.

Currently we can’t create multiple schedules but it is a feature we are looking to implement in a future version.

I actually ended up deactivating your plugin because:

1) I wasn’t able to change encryption options. From encryption to non enceyption and viser verser. Would be great to have more options for this.

2) And the reason I wanted to change encyption options, was because the passwords were not working. The fact that this happened was a bit scary, and even if i could fix this, I didn’t want to take the risk of this happening, when my backup may be required in the future and especially when there is absolutely no way to recover it.

Oh OK. I can give some answers to those concerns if you wanted. If not, never mind.

1) The encryption options can be changed. However, if you login to the online vault on the Online Backup Settings page, they can’t be changed. It will say above them “Encryption details cannot be changed while Online Backup is enabled. Please Logout”. If you then logout on the Online Backup Settings page, they can then be edited. You can then login again on Online Backup Settings – as long as no data exists on our servers. If data still exists on our servers it will report an encryption mismatch – the data on our server will need to be deleted before it will let you login with a different key.

The reason for this is that once you start backing up to our vault, the data on our vault is encrypted using your key. We then only backup changed files. If you could change the key it would cause a big head ache as new files would be encrypted with new key, but the other files would be with an old key. To download a snapshot you then need to know both keys! So we lock encryption. If the key needs changing data needs to be removed from our vault. This can be done by logging in and requesting deletion for the blog in question – this then starts a 24 hour grace period in which you can cancel, after which everything is purged.

One thing you might notice is that if you are using online backup, you can’t choose different encryption key for say, a download backup, or an email backup. The key is locked and must be used for all three. You can’t also do an unencrypted download backup. This is something we’re improving soon so you can use different encryption per backup or turn it off per backup (not for online though of course.)

2) In this instance you would Logout on Online Backup Settings. Then login at wordpress.backup-technology.com to delete all data. A day later once it is wiped you can then change encryption on General Settings and then log in again on Online Backup Settings – it will start using the new details.

If you were using the exact same password to decrypt that is in the General Settings page and getting decryption errors, it might be due to a corrupt file that you are trying to decrypt. If you want to try again. Make sure the file downloaded fully. We are aware of backup files for download sometimes not correctly downloading from some hosts if they take more than a few minutes to download. The web browser loses connection due to a script timeout on the server and assumes the backup to be complete. So the backup page says “The backup size is 100 MiB” but your web browser downloads a file that is only 85 MiB. We’re working on a fix at the moment to be released in a few weeks which changes the way we download large backup files.

Hope this addresses any concerns. If you did want to try again we can help with any issues to get them resolved.

Hi Jason, I went through your response, and it makes more sense now.

I have multiple websites. As with all cpanels, the structure defaults such that the files of all the sites are folders contained within the main root folder. So this means that if I backup the main website, all the other folders will also be backed up. Would you recommend backing these all up together, or seperately?

How important is encryption? I don’t imagine that the backup to your servers can be detected and if my password is good enough, then no one would ever have access to it – right?

It depends on your requirements. But I would say if the websites are integrally separate so they do not depend on each other, backup each individually, and on the main root site exclude the folders for the subdomains.

Encryption is only as important as you make it. I would definitely recommend it since it cannot hurt – just be sure to look after the encryption key! Inherently with data stored on our servers, we do have access to it – however, policies prevent anyone from ever using it. Encryption is a way for you to secure the data and not need to have to trust any policies etc.

Encryption will also mean the data is only ever in a readable state on your server itself – which is where the data is anyway – so it pretty much means you don’t have to worry about absolutely anything except protecting your server/website itself, and protecting your encryption key. Since the data can go anywhere and it’s useless without the key.

What does it mean to create and download a “snapshot”? How is this different from downloading the database and filesystem?

A “snapshot” is a backup of the blog as it appeared on that date.
It’s basically just letting you download previous backups.
