Compatibility with product-add-ons

I have a smart grouped product that has a general optional attribute that we are showing using the product add-ons plugin. Unfortunately, the 2 plugins don’t play well together. I tried the “add the main product” option for grouped products but the add-on price was still 0.
has anyone come up with a solution to this?
Since my site is live I resorted to creating a variable product and setting it’s qty to 1 but it is not the most elegant solution.
