    While it functionally makes no difference, the highlighter goes absolutely nuts when dealing with a single square bracket that has no closing square bracket tag, like shortcodes do. But as you may know, that’s exactly how Footnotation — the replacement for fb-notation (I think) — works:

    end of sentence.[1. This is a (simple) note.]

    Starting at about (simple the editor will start highlighting strings, and single words at seeming random, until there is actually a recognizable closing square bracket. Usually, in my work, that means a [/caption] tag.
