Compatibility between bbpress 2.0 & buddpress 1.5

Back in May JJJ indicated that there would not be interoperability between buddypress 1.5 and bbpress 2.0.
With the bbpress rc4 release, however, there is a mention of buddypress activity stream and @mention integration.
How does this integration work? I assume we should leave the buddypress forum functionality disabled in order to make use of it?
Is this an indicator that full interoperability (and removing of bbpress from core buddypress) will happen sooner that originally anticipated?
