Compability question regarding chossing template

    wp 5.3.2

    I’ve been recommended a few templates from templatemonster, all is designed for woocommerce. When I chech them, all is only compatible with version 3.8 of woocommerce, but now we are at 3.9.1

    what issues can I run into if I choose a template suporting a newer version of woocommerce? Isn’t woocommerce backward compatible, meaning that a newer version of woocommerce is compatible with an older version???

    I would have thought it wouldn’t be compatible if I tryed to make it work with an older verison of woocommerce. Like template is compatible with woocommerce 3.8 and I want to use woocommerce 3.6

    just asking.. we are building a new shop and don’t need to migrate data from an existing shop

    Excellent question. The one thing you typically say for certain when a theme or plugin says it is compatible up to version 3.8 is that there hasn’t been an update to it since 3.9 was released. That’s only marginally helpful. Most developers won’t release an update that only changes the compatibility numbers. The changes between 3.8 and 3.9 aren’t especially likely to break a theme so I would expect it to work pretty well even if 3.9 isn’t specifically mentioned.

    Going back to much older versions may work. We wouldn’t recommend it at all. You miss out on bug fixes, security patches and new features by not using the current version.

    If a theme relies on a function added in a newer version and they don’t load it correctly, it could cause an error if used with an old version of WooCommerce.

    Most of the time with themes, the issues come down to layout issues from out of date files. Sometimes the problems can be bigger. It really just depends on what the theme is trying to do and the skill of the developer who crafted it.

    I hope that gives you some context as you make this decision. More than the compatibility numbers, I would suggest looking at how often the theme is updated. You want to pick one that the developer continues to work with. That would be the best option moving forward.
