Community site: WordPress vs Buddypress

Hei,

I’m new to WordPress and about to start building a community site. It would have user profiles, shoutbox, classifieds, forum, newsfeed with community submitted news, events calendar, user blogs, gallery etc. And possibility to either create a new user profile or log in with FB account. Also, most of the site’s content (news, comments, pictures, events) would be synced with a FB page.

I’ve scoped out several plugins that would help me do the job. But the main question is, should I build on top of the vanilla WordPress or Buddypress ?

BuddyPress has its own forum. You might post your question there. It isn’t that you can’t ask here too, but the number of people using BuddyPress is going to be greater there than here. I, for example, have never used BuddyPress so I can’t really say if it is better for your purposes, though you can do all of what you mention is WordPress.

I’d play around with BP – it does seem like it’s going to give you a lot of the functionality you are looking for, you would need to determine if it is robust enough for your needs.

For instance the forum provided with BP is bbPress, a grown up version of what the www.remarpro.com forums use. I like it, and use it on VoodooPress, however, it’s not a heavy duty, full featured forum like some people expect – it may not suit the needs of some people
