Comments must be approved but just appear anyway

  • I’m in the process of setting up a blog at https://mabelfigworthy.co.uk/fof/. As I want to moderate all comments before they are published, in Discussion Settings I’ve checked:

    Before a comment appears: An administrator must always approve the comment
    Comment author must have a previously approved comment

    I’ve tried ticking only the first, only the second, and both. But whatever combination I choose, my test comments are published immediately. They don’t go Pending, and I don’t get a notification that there is a comment.

    Could this be because so far, I am the only one posting comments and it recognises me as being the Administrator? If so, do I need to create a separate user in order to test my comment settings?

  • I tried to leave you a test comment on your site, but it requires a login, and apparently a login registered with your site (as I am logged into WordPress using my own WordPress login). –Edwin

    Check these two options … you have four option but you have to check 2 option and uncheck the option which says

    Comment author must have a previously approved comment

    then after the moderation comments shown

    @ Edwin — I’m not completely sure what the options and differences are with login and registering. In Discussion Settings the option is “Users must be registered and logged in to comment”, so I guess that means you can’t ask people to just log in (like you tried) without being registered with the blog.

    On the whole, do you think it is a good idea to allow only registered users to post? Or is that very restricting?

    I also offer the option of being notified by email when new posts are added, but as far as I know you don’t need to register for that.

    @ Altaf — I’ll start playing with some of those options, thanks. Just one question, if you shouldn’t tick both “An administrator must always approve the comment” and “Comment author must have a previously approved comment “, why are they tick boxes rather than radio buttons?

    OK, I think I’ve worked it out. If I create a new user by registering for my blog as someone else, and then log in, and then comment, it does hold the comment for moderation! So the problem was simply that I was recognised as being the administrator.

    On the one hand I’m usually tempted to apply as much security as the purpose of the site can stand — on the other hand from time to time I’ve been pleased to get an interesting response from somewhere unexpected.
