    Hi there!

I’ve read a lot of threads regarding this problem, but none of the solutions seem to work for me. Here’s the problem:

When I try to post a comment at my site, it goes to 404, and the comment isn’t posted. I use custom permalinks, and my .htaccess file is writable. I kind of have a feeling that it has something to do with the fact that all the WordPress files are in a sub-folder, and the index.php is in my site’s root. But the settings are correct.

Does anyone know how to get my comments working?

Okay, just thought I would post the solution here… Make a clean install of WordPress…

Thanks for this thread — I have exactly the same issue. Just to confirm, what do you mean by clean install?

I’ve downloaded WP 2.7.1 again and ftp’d the files to my server once again. I don’t see that this has resolved the issue though. I did not overwrite my existing themes (I use Primepress theme). I did overwrite the default and classic themes from WP. When I switch themes, it doesn’t resolve the issue.

    My site:
    https://recoveredrecipes.com/

    404 Comments URL:
    https://recoveredrecipes.com/comment-page-/#comment-

Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer based on your experience!

    some one !!
    i have same problem!!!

I had the same issue after setting up an email for posting. I disabled all the plugins and the issue was resolved. I have seen this several times before with plugins. (I also went to https://…/wp-mail.php and that clean out something in the mailbox.)

i have the same problem.. if i use permalinks ?%postname%/ i get 404 error and i get redirected to the home page if i use the default ones

i have deactivated ALL my plug ins and it still didnt work in both occasions

    any help is appreciated

Dunno about any of you guys, but the offending plugin was Akismet (v2.2.6) for me. Once I disabled it everything worked just fine. There was a connectivity issue on the Akismet configuration page though, no idea if it’s related to the problem. Two of the four available Akismet servers were blocked.

I have a similar issue and tested it on my test site. The comments work if the URL is:

https://www.blogname.COM but not if it reads https://www.blogname.com/WP-BLOG-EXTENSION

    Any ideas?

    kp,
I just got off the phone with my hosting company to request help with this very issue. I told him I thought it was a pretty permalink issue. And sure enough…that’s what it was. I originally had my permalins as /%postname%/ We removed the last forward slash and now it works great. Here’s what my permalink is now set to /%postname%

I tried deleting Akismet like jalenoes suggested but that did not fix my problem. I’m going to try to reinstall Akismet now that the permalink / 404 error comment issue is resolved.

    Hope that helps.

OK, I had this problem and was completely stumped for a long time. Found the cause: wp-comments-post.php had the wrong permissions set. Not sure how it got that way (I didn’t manually change it), but it needs to be set to 644.
