Comments can't be entered…not found.

  • I’m in the process of moving my blog from Blogspot to WordPress (Ver. 3.3.2).

    I’m hosting on my own servers using Apache. I had another WordPress blog running some years ago for a group.

    I’ve imported all my posts from Blogspot and the comments appeared to come over as well. I can go into MySql and see the comments and the post. However, when I try to see the comments or enter a new one, I get this error.

    Not Found

    The requested URL /2012/04/27/friday-follies-for-april-27-2012/ was not found on this server.
    Apache/2.2.8 (Fedora) Server at crucis-court.com Port 80

    Shouldn’t WordPress be pulling the comments out of MySql?

    Yes, that fixed it or so it appears. I had been using the “Month and Name” selection. Does the default use MySql to store posts and comments while the other selections don’t?

    Curious minds would like to know. I’m a retired telecom engineer. I used to do a lot of C, Pascal and other structured programming but little PHP. I want my WordPress blog (https://crucis-court.com) to look as much as possible to my old blogspot blog (https://crucis-court.blogspot.com).

    You can mark this resolved although I’d still like to know why it worked.

    Yes – all site content is stored in the database in exactly the same way respective of what permalink structure is being used. However, it sounds like the server rewriting that is needed to use non-default permalinks isn’t working on your site.

    When you switch to one of the other preset permalink types, do you see a message about an .htaccess file?

    No. I switched to several and no error message appeared. All said…

    Permalink structure updated.

    I don’t have a problem using the default mode. I was just mimicing, as much as I could, the look of my old blogspot blog.

    I do have another issue but not on this subject. I’ll post another question for that.

    Can you locate your .htaccess file in the WordPress root folder? If so, what does it contain?

    Yes, it was in the WordPress root directory. Here’s the contents.

    # BEGIN WordPress

    # END WordPress

    chmod = 644

    mw

    That looks like the .htaccess file was being updated, so those links should have worked. If you want to take this further, check with your hosts that mod_rewrite is running on your server.

    Esmi, I’m my own host. I’m running Apache on Linux and mod_rewrite is enabled.

    Is it just the comments you have/had a problem with? Can you post a link to a page that demonstrates the problem?

    No, the “sample” page didn’t work either but that could have been an operator error. My initial entry above included the error message when comments failed. I’ve now reverted to the default permalink and that is working.

    Here is the link when the error occurs (I’ve reset permalinks to the month and post (3rd) selection.
