• Newbie alert!
One day into PHP, mySQL and Apache. Am installing things on my local machine because I need to understand things before taking it to a server, so right now everything is locahhost. *Apache 2*, btw, I read that PHP recommends a 1.3.x version, could this be the source of my problem listed below.
Anyways, lots of reading and messing around and WP is currently up and running. Here’s the thing though: can’t post a comment. Everytime I click on the ‘Comment’ link, I get a Not Found error — ‘The requested URL /archives/2004/03/25/newer/ was not found on this server.’ newer is the post in question.
I get a similar error if I click on the post entry.
Is there something obvious that I am missing here? No hacks, no moderation on posts. I am assuming Archives are automatically generated…
Also after logging in, WP dumps me into a directory listing of my root. I need to click on index.php for things to progress from there.

  • Looks like you’ve got fancy permalinks on. Did you create the .htaccess file in your root folder?

You might not have changed the .htaccess to reflect the url ReWrite that you are rewriting
Or you might not have the mod Rewrite installed in Apache.
In options, change the rewriting to none, so you get urls like
    index.php?m=200204
    and so on.

Nope, had it earlier, removed it. No permalinks. Should I?

I installed mod_rewrite, just an uncomment or two, yeah?
“In options, change the rewriting to none…” can you please elaborate on this? Did you mean Rewrite Engine On to Off in .htaccess?

What OS are you running?… not sure if it makes a diff or not, but I run Apache 2 on Windows 2000, and have problems w/ using mod-rewrite, because it tries to actually find the dir in windows, which of course doesn’t exist…. at least I blame it on Windows…. now that I think about ti, I don’t rightly know for sure that it is a Windows problem…. could be Apache2 I suppose…..

Reinstalled, did not touch the permalinks option this time, it works now.

Nope, not Apache2, installed 1.3.29 and it was going fine until I used permalink’s options. The module was enabled and the .htaccess file had the correct text. Strange. Works now but like I said I haven’t touched the permalink this time, using Apache2.
