• Hi –

I noticed that you added a “county” field for the sake of us Yanks who use your plugin, which is much appreciated. I would like to offer a suggestion for improving it.

In the US, it is fairly common for real estate websites to include the county as a search parameter, which is a useful feature. However, the county is not generally referenced in mailing addresses.

(The address format used in the US is essentially the same as is used in Australia, with the street address followed by the city/town/suburb, then the state abbreviation, then the postal-ZIP code.)

It would be ideal if the county was displayed after the ZIP code, instead of after the city as the plugin does now. For example, instead of displaying the address like this:

    1313 Mockingbird Lane
    Las Vegas, Clark, NV 89101

It would be less confusing to display it to users like this:

    1313 Mockingbird Lane
    Las Vegas NV 89101
    (Clark County)

(A couple of minor points, but instead of having counties, the state of Louisiana has parishes and Puerto Rico has municipios.)

In a related point, it would be helpful if there was a parent/child relationship between states, counties and cities, particularly when using the search feature. For example, if a user selects California as a state, it would be helpful if the only counties and cities that appeared in the search pulldowns were counties and cities in California.

Thanks in advance. (I’m still learning about your plugin, but so far it’s quite impressive.)

Thanks for the explanation, that makes sense, we will look at enhancing this.

Thanks for the reply, it’s appreciated.

One point that I should clarify re: the parent vs. child comment: Cities and counties can be somewhat distinct entities that can overlap with each other, so it might be appropriate to have the city to be the child of the state and to also have the county to separately be a child of the state.

A real world example of how this works: portions of the city of Kansas City, Missouri are located across four different counties, and Kansas City isn’t the only city that is located in those counties. (Confusingly enough, there is also a Kansas City, Kansas, but that is a completely different city from its Missouri counterpart. The two cities share proximity and a name, but are otherwise separate political entities — in the US, cities and counties don’t cross state lines.)

There are many instances when there will be different counties and cities that have the same names but that are located in different states, so it is necessary for a database that covers a wide area to be able to distinguish between different locations with the same name. The state names are unique, but the city and county names are not.

    Thanks again.

Great suggestions! Been on my wishlist for quite some time but RW101 really crystallized in writing what I had in my head.
