• I have a question or a request. I wanted to know if there is a way to keep visitors from impersonating the administrator. I don’t like the fact that users can post a comment and use my name. Is there an option somewhere or a way to edit the system so that certian names won’t be able to post unless the user posting is in fact the owner ( via – they have logged in or will be asked for a password when they post under their name ) Do you understand what I mean?
    Thank you!

  • Look under the Discussion Options, you should see a Comment Moderation box in which you can put the words you do not wish to see in the comments

That’s not exactly what he meant I’m sure, I know I’d want my readers to reference me by name and not get moderated.
I think he means the user name they use… an interesting point that I actually now am wondering about…

Correct darkcryst. I mean, sure I can enter the names that I don’t want them to use into that box, but then what if someone is posting a comment and wants to use my name. Or what if I, the admin, want to post one of those names, ie: “yea, my name is chris” and I won’t be allowed to do it. I find this rather odd. You’d think there’d be a way to stop the impersonating of an admin via comments. Any ideas?

You can go in an edit a comment that impersonates you which is a practical and easy way of doing it.
Comment authentication is a tricky thing.
What would like WP to do when someone tries to post with the admin’ nickname? Can you think of a tenable solution?

Well, yes, going in and removing the comment is the only way now, but rather, for a long term solution, I believe that you should have a file, you enter the names you don’t want visitors to use, then when a user tries to use one of those restricted names, it will either just take him to a page that says, “no you can’t with this name” or a pop-up or something. I remember Cutenews had this problem along time ago and the fixed it.
The way CN does it is that if the user tries to post under a restricted name, he has to be (1) either the real owner of that name or (2) the admin, in which turn the system will ask him/her for the password. If the password is correct, post goes thru, if not, they have to change their name. Get it?

But WP does not register commentors. I guess if spoofing were a problem, then I would be singing a different tune ??

Maybe comments made by the poster could be authentificated and with a different format, like Dunstana€?s blog.

    Sounds like a plan.
