• I’ve tried a few other threads, but since I haven’t received any replies, I hope posting a new one will help resolve this issue.

The problem is that my comment settings change by themselves without any input from me. Every few days, I find I have to go into my discussion settings and put them back where they belong.

    My discussion settings should be:

-Comment author must fill out name and e-mail CHECKED
-Users must be registered and logged in to comment UNCHECKED

In the individual posts, the “Allow comments” box should be CHECKED.

Does anyone know why these settings keep changing by themselves, and how I can remedy this? There are no other users or admins for this blog.

    Thanks. -Richard

  • I don’t want to sound rude but are you sure you hit the save button after setting the discussion settings?

I have no clue what else could cause this. Other possibilities:
    – some functions.php setting overriding the dashboard ones
    – some setting inside config.php overriding the dashboard ones
    – a plugin overriding the dashboard settings

Yes, I always save the settings. They will stick for a short amount of time, like a week, then someone will email me saying they suddenly can’t comment or need to be logged in to comment. I’m sure it’s a code error, but where? I have several other blogs installed, same version, same theme, that do not do this.

Have you got any specific plugins for comments or discussions installed?

    I have very few plug-ins…

    Akismet
    Bliss Drive Hit Counter Plugin
    Special Text Boxes
    WordPress Importer

Honestly, I haven’t got a clue. If you can, try looking through your function.php file and wp-config.php files and see if anything is going on there. Look for anything that says comment or discussion.

Once again, both my global settings and my individual post settings have changed without me changing them. Comments are now closed for posts, and now “Users must be registered and logged in to comment” is checked, and I didn’t check it.

Does anyone know how to bump this topic to WordPress staff?

    Thanks.

Could you try these 2 plugins. They’ll scan your wordpress files for problems like viruses and hacks.

I’ll give them a try thanks.

Have you found a solution to this issue? The same problem has been plaguing me for a long, long time… it’s intensely frustrating.

It persisted until the 3.7.1 update. It has not happened since. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Sorry to report that this is happening again.

This is happening again. Today all my “allow comments” boxes were unchecked, and “users must be registered and logged in to comment” was checked, neither of which I did.
