    Hi!
I’ve begun using the Postmatic plugin to handle comments on my site. That allows comment reading and response via email (very handy).

Curiously, since then when I respond to a comment by email, my own comment goes into moderation, and i’m the super admin. ?? I’m wondering if this is possibly due to this Wordfence setting, which I’ve never thought about before:

“Hold anonymous comments using member emails for moderation”

In any case, thanks for this great plugin!

  • Hey Folks,

I’ll chime in that we’ve seen this with three different users this week. I’m not familiar enough with how you are doing moderation w/ Wordfence but if there is something we at Postmatic can help you troubleshoot please let me know.

@flamenco: Have you tried temporarily disabling “Hold anonymous comments using member emails for moderation”, to see if the issue stops?

That part of Wordfence’s comment filtering is checking if the email address submitted by the comment author belongs to the current logged-in user, so a visitor who is not logged in cannot use the email address of a valid user on the site.

Depending on how you use your comments, you may not need that option enabled — especially if the users’ email addresses are not publicly available on the site or visible to other users who register, and it would be unlikely that some anonymous user (or bot) would find them.

@Postmatic: Thanks for dropping in. Since this option is checking if the email address belongs to the currently logged-in user, and I’m guessing that the API doesn’t impersonate the user who submitted the comment on the site (which is good), I don’t think that option can currently work with Postmatic. Do you agree?

    Matt,
Yes, I am trying that setting now. I just wanted to run it by you in case it helps.

Yes, I was logged into the site while doing all this.

    Thanks! Dave

We can offer these details about how Postmatic adds email comments:

    • It is not done in a logged-in context
    • The comment’s user_id field is set to the user submitting the email comment
    • The comment’s comment_author_IP field is left blank

@flamenco: Just checking in on this — is it working for you now?

@Postmatic: Thanks for the additional details. It makes sense, and in this case I do think the best solution for now is to disable “Hold anonymous comments using member emails for moderation” in Wordfence. I’ve made a note of this and will check if there are any other options, too.

Thanks, Matt! I’ll pass the info along to our users as well.

    Matt,
Thanks for your attention to this. I don’t know for sure (if turning off “Hold comments…” is working), as I’ve been comment-less for a few days. (sniff!) But I anticipate this workaround will be fine.

    Thanks again! Dave
