• I’ve been using wordpress for about 4 years now and sometime last spring I noticed that some of my comments weren’t being delivered to my e-mail account. Also, sometimes my comment form is randomly closed. (It happens even when I haven’t logged into my wordpress account for a day or two, so I know I’m not accidentally resetting them.) When the comment form is closed, the flags that require users to be logged in and comments must be moderated are also set to true.

Because this is a random problem, it’s difficult to test. A comment from User A might make it to my e-mail today, but when he comments again in two days, it won’t make it. My Webhost blames this on WordPress or Akismet (of course). I’ve uninstalled Akismet and still have the same problems with mail not being delivered. Out of my last 12 comments, only 5 were delivered to my e-mail account.

I’d greatly appreciate any help. My tech knowledge is very limited. (For example, I’ve tried to redirect my comments to another mail account not in my domain by entering the new e-mail into the e-mail address line on the general settings page, but the e-mail won’t redirect — the comments that are delivered are still being delivered to my domain name account.)

Also, my webhost is ipower. Do non-ipower users have similar problems?

    Thanks,
    Anna

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Thanks for your response Esmi.

All of my plugins (only two — akismet and database backup) are currently deactivated.

I’ve hesitated to switch themes because I have so many non-blog pages on my website that are coded to my current theme and they’d all have to be re-done. Ouch. It’s a consideration though. Do themes get old or incompatible with new versions of wordpress?

I’ll try resetting the plugins folder too.

    Thanks,
    Anna

Consider it a temporary change initially as part of the troubleshooting process.

Oh yes! Especially if they haven’t been updated for a while. Or you can get a poorly coded theme that worked because of a minor bug in WordPress core that was later fixed in an update.

Thanks again Esmi! Can you direct me to a how-to on changing my theme? (I see a button for upgrading my current theme, but not changing.) I searched the forum but didn’t get very far — must not be typing in the correct keywords.

    Thanks,
    Anna

Navigate to Appearance->Themes and select the Activate link under the Twenty Ten theme. If you’re activating any other theme, always try the Preview link first. If the theme has problems, you’ll be forewarned before you actually use it on your site.
