I just launched a new blog, everything nice, made a test post and invited my friends to come by and comment. Now the comment box won’t enable. I have been making lots of customization, so it’s hard to track down what is causing this, exactly…but it doesn’t seem to be a setting I can change, it seems like a code glitch. Maybe plug-in problems, but I turned a few suspects off and still no comment box.
I saw it exactly one time when I made a test comment and it worked just fine…did I disable comments when I deleted that, or is it something else?…help!

  • You have quite a twisted approach… if you couldn’t “find” a WP bug, now you switched to WP’s “incompatibility” with a large host. For me “large” is not equal with “good”.
Didn’t cross your mind that the ‘large host’ might be incompatible with basic requirements of a working web?

The issue seems to be that Netfirms does not support Allow Overwrite.
So not a WP bug after all, just a compatibility issue with a large host. Hopefully these hacks still work.

    Ahhhhhhhhh!

See, this is why we have been going around in circles for 40 posts!

Your .htaccess file is absolutely fine, it’s just that your hosting provider means that it will be ignored.

The effect of this on you is that you won’t be able to use pretty permalinks at this host. If they used to work and have stopped, then its possible that your hosting service allowed the overrides for a bit, then turned them off again. Sorry.

For info, this is not a “feature” of large hosting. It’s a feature of that particular company’s hosting (and maybe some others) but not all.

Okay, but I don’t see why you have to attack me over this…it’s certainly not my fault there is a conflict with the server configuration. And the fact remains that this started to be a problem with recent updates of WordPress, so it’s as true that WP doesn’t support Netfirms as that Netfirms doesn’t support WP.
When an update doesn’t work with certain common configurations, I call this a bug. Call it what you like. I’m sure you’ll be better able to advise the next Netfirms user with these issues.
BTW, the hacks didn’t work either.

Well it is not our fault that you posted your half assed rant without ever mentioning your host, or apparently what the performance of that host is in relation to WP. WP does not impose any burdens on any hosts which are set up in accordance with industry standard. But if hosts do their own thing in config there is no guarantee that anything will work at all.

    From Netfirms support:
NOTE: WordPress v2.0 has reported issues with WordPress v2.0 Permalinks and PHP 5. Therefore we suggest that you activate PHP version 4 from your Netfirms Control Panel if you wish to use WordPress permalinks.

So maybe the other hosts (like the one in this thread) are running into an issue with PHP 5.

There are many, many issues with permalinks and recent upgrades.

Finally got permalinks working on Netfirms, thank you very much joel!

I suggest all Netfirms users with permalinks problems read his blog. It’s a little tricky, but it works!
