Columns not appearing

Hi,
This is my first attempt at building my own site; so please forgive my naivety. I’m trying to create two columns using the code below but they just appear stacked on top of one another.[column-group]
[column]This is my first column[/column]
[column]This is my second column[/column]
[/column-group]Hope you can help.
